Watoga State Park

This Is The Largest Of The West Virginia State Parks

Situated close to the town of Seebert in Pocahontas County, Watoga State Park is the largest of the state parks in West Virginia as it encompasses over 10,100 acres of land.

The park was originally planned to be a state forest on land which had been purchased in 1925 however, it was decided in 1934 to develop it as a state park.

Most of the construction work was carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the park was officially opened on the 1st of July 1937.

Many of the structures built by the C.C.C. now form the Watoga State Park Historic District which consists of the buildings they created as well as the reservoir, cabins shelters, swimming pool, fountains and the camp the workers lived in. This Historic District highlights the work of the C.C.C. so well that in 2010 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The park is also home to a 400 acre Arboretum named in honor of a famous local naturalist called Fred E. Brooks who died in 1933. The Arboretum was opened and dedicated to him in 1938.

Watoga boasts two very fine campgrounds. The first one is the Beaver Creek campground located near the northern entrance to the park, it has 38 sites 12 of which have electric hook-ups. The second site is the Riverside Campground which is right alongside the Greenbrier River and this ground has 50 sites, 38 of which have electric. During the busy summer months reservations can be made for some of the sites. (See contact details below.)

Both of the campgrounds allow tents and RV`s and have bath-houses with showers, laundry, picnic tables and grills.

Watoga State Park also has 36 modern cabins some of which are disabled accessible. They sleep from two to eight people and can even be booked during the winter months when the area is a great place for cross country skiing.

In the park is a lovely swimming pool which is close to a number of games courts such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, ping pong and horseshoes. There are horse stables at Watoga and guided trail rides are available from May through September.

One of the highlights of the area is the Greenbrier River Trail which has been rated as one of the top ten hiking trails in the United States. It is over 70 miles long and goes through some of the finest scenery imaginable. It is extremely suitable for family or group hiking or biking as it is over fairly level terrain.
