Roper Lake State Park, In South Eastern Arizona, Is Close To The Beautiful Pinaleño Mountains
This lovely example of the Arizona State Parks is located on 338 acres of land in the south east corner of the state. Centered around a 32 acre man-made lake, the park looks out toward the dramatic Pinaleno Mountains and the high peak of Mount Graham, which has an elevation of 10,720 feet.
The Pinalenos are a fairly remote range and according to the Nature Conservancy they contain "the highest diversity of habitats of any mountain range in North America."
The mountains are home to a wonderful population of rare red squirrels also some of the oldest conifer trees in the south west United States.
Roper Lake State Park was opened to the public in March 1975 and actually consists of two serarate units. The main part is sited just off U.S. Route 191 five miles south of the town of Safford.
The Beautiful Lake Roper
Three miles further south is the second unit which is known as the Dankworth Pond section of Roper Lake State Park. This pond covers about 10 acres and is fed by a warm Artesian well.
Dankworth Pond was run as a private fishing lake before being purchased by the Arizona State Parks in 1975. It is still a great spot to catch Bass, Crappie, Sunfish and especially Channel Catfish.
As well as fishing, visitors to the park can enjoy a relaxing dip in the outdoor hot tub which is fed by the warm waters of the Artesian well and naturally maintained at a temperature of ninety degrees.
