Reed Bingham State Park
Thousands Of Buzzards Roost In The Trees Of This One Of The State Parks In Georgia
Reed Bingham State Park covers 1613 acres of land in south central Georgia close to the town of Adel in Cook County.
The park received its name from Amos Reed Bingham who was a prominant local citizen instrumental in getting the park opened.
The park, with its 375 acre lake, is an extremely popular attraction in that part of the state and on weekends and holidays it can become very busy. The lake has a fine swimming beach with an excellent pavilion which is an ideal meeting place for outings and family reunions.

As well as the pavilion the park has six other picnic shelters and four group shelters all of which can be reserved for a small fee. Having such a wonderful lake, boating and canoeing are popular pastimes, three boat ramps provide easy access to the water and canoe and kayak rentals are available.
The lake at Reed Bingham State Park is renowned for its fishing and bass, bream, catfish and crappie are all to be caught there. A disabled accessible fishing pier reaches out into the waters of the lake.
Camping at the park is either at the Pioneer Campground or at one of the 46 sites in the main campground. These are for tents and trailers and all have hookups.

The Gopher Tortoise Trail At Reed Bingham S.P.
At the moment there are five trails at Reed Bingham with more being planned. One of the most popular is the "Gopher Tortoise Loop" which is a mile long and where you will see these fascinating but endangered creatures and their burrows.
The "Little River Trail" is almost a mile long and passes through swampland where you may catch a glimpse of otters or deer. The half mile "Birdwalk Trail" takes the hiker through a mixed southern hardwood environment. The other trails are the "Upland Loop Trail" and the "Turkey Oak Trail."

An extremely interesting feature of the park that occurs during the winter months is the arrival of thousands of "buzzards." They are known as that but are actually black vultures and turkey vultures. They roost in the trees of the park and soar and swoop overhead, the best time to witness this phenomenon is late afternoon or early morning. The best place to view them is close to the dam and the bridge and on the boardwalk of the nature trail.
