Red Rock State Park Is Used Extensively For Environmental Education
Covering 286 acres of land in Yavapai County near Sedona in Arizona,
Red Rock S. P. is a day-use area which hosts school parties and private groups and provides an excellent environmental education facility.
Established as one of the Arizona State Parks in 1986, Red Rock was previously part of the Smoke Trail Ranch, a private retreat for Jack and Helen Frye who purchased the property in 1941. Jack Frye was president of Trans World Airlines at that time.
He died in 1959 and his wife Helen firstly planned to sell the land to be developed as a resort complex but that deal collapsed. The land was then transferred to a religious movement called Eckankar of which she was a member.

Eventually through a convoluted land purchase deal arranged by Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt, Red Rock State Park was created and opened to the public on the 19th of October 1991.
The park features a 1.4 mile stretch of Oak Creek, a year round stream which flows through what is generally an arid area. This creek supports a diverse habitat of trees such as Arizona Alder, Arizona Sycamore, Velvet Ash and Freemont Cottonwood. Its waters are also home to several rare species of fish, frogs and the Sonora Mud Turtle.
The nearby town of Sedona is close to the base of an escarpment known as the Mongollon Rim which runs in an east west direction through the middle of Arizona.
Erosion has bitten into the rim over the ages and produced some of the most stunning rock features of canyons and buttes to be found anywhere in the world.

Guided geological hikes around Red Rock S. P. take visitors through an unforgetable experience and informs them about the landscape that surrounding them.
The park has a superb visitor center which contains interpretive exhibits, a classroom, a theater and a gift shop. Outside there are two large picnic shelters, one has a capacity of 75 people and the other 50.
Hikers can enjoy five miles of trails within the park and these connect to other trails on adjacent U.S. Forest Service land which can be used by mountain bikers and horseback riders.
