Hyde Memorial State Park

This New Mexico State Park Is Located Close To The City Of Sante Fe

Hyde Memorial State Park is one of the oldest of the New Mexico State Parks having first been opened to the public in 1938.

Situated at an elevation of 8,500 feet, it is in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains just a short drive from the city of Santa Fe. The park runs in a south to north direction alongside Highway 475.

The park was named as a memorial to Benjamin Talbot Babbit Hyde.

Known as "Uncle Bennie" he was keen that children should receive an education about the outdoors. His family donated 350 acres of land to the state of New Mexico in 1934 so a park could be created in his memory. Hyde Memorial State Park now gets over 31,500 visitors a year.

Running through the woods at Hyde Memorial State Park is the Little Tesuque Creek which adds greatly to the atmosphere of the park as well as being a safe and fun place for kids to play. Many of the campsites are literally on the banks of the creek.

Four hiking trails of varying lengths wind through the attractive country of the park, none of them are too demanding althought they are a bit up and down. Hikers will see plenty of interesting plant and wildlife, especially quite a few cute chipmonks. The "West Circle Trail" is the longest at 2.2 miles while the "East Circle Trail" runs for a mile. The "Girl Scout Trail" and the "Waterfall Trail" are both shorter.

There are a number of picnic tables around the park which are covered by small shelters to protect visitors from the summer rains which occasionally hit the park. These shelters also have fire pits with grills. Three seperate shelters are specifically for group use only and one of these is very close to the childrens playground.

Here is a map of the park showing its layout with all the trails and facilities.

Reviews of Hyde Memorial State Park often say how attractive a place it is for camping and hiking however, some comments refer to the traffic noise from the nearby road. However, don`t let that put you off visiting this lovely little park as its location and atmosphere is wonderful.
