Eisenhower State Park

Named In Honor Of The Only President To Come From Kansas This Is One Of The Best Kansas State Parks

The Eisenhower State Park used to be known as Melvern State Park until its name was changed by the Kansas state legislature in 1990. It is located on the north shore of the 6,900 acre Melvern Reservoir, the name change was to honor Dwight D. Eisenhower who was the only President ever to come from Kansas.

The park is located in Osage County about 35 miles south of the city of Topeka.

The closest towns to the park are Lyndon and Osage City.

The park consists of 1,785 acres of land most of which is rolling prairie but there is also 440 acres of very attractive woodland.

Next to the park is the Melvern Wildlife Area which is around ten thousand acres of land set aside as a place to observe the wildlife. Hunting there is allowed, but by permission only and it does not include the thousand acre wildfowl sanctuary.

Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) are the authority responsible for running Eisenhower and all the other Kansas State Parks, within this park they have provided a lot of facilities for the visitors. These include a beach, boat slip, basketball court, horse-shoe pits, volleyball court and 18 miles of trails.

There are 187 utility campsites with five bath-houses. There are three different primitive camping grounds within the park. These are at Five-Star, Sailboat Beach and Swim Beach.

In addition there are 15 special campsites, with individual corrals, at the Westpoint Campground which are dedicated for riders and their horses.

Ten sites are available for group camping and the KDWPT have four new cabins which visitors can rent.
