Bear Brook State Park Is One Of The Largest Of The State Parks In New Hampshire

Over 10,000 acres in size, Bear Brook is the largest developed state park in New Hampshire. Many of the present day facilities were built during the 1930`s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Where the park now stands was once the original site for the town of Allenstown. However, following a period of heavy logging during the 1880`s the site of the town shifted westwards.

As you hike round the park, nowadays, you will come across many reminders of the old town such as stone foundations and even a cemetary.

Also found in Bear Brook S. P. is a very interesting complex of museums. There are the New Hampshire Antique Snowmobile Museum, The Allenstown Meeting House and the Richard Diehl Museum which chronicles the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the area.

Camping is extremely popular at Bear Brook and within the park is a beautiful small lake called Beaver Pond and here there are 101 campsites nestling among the trees.

The campground is open for reservations from the Memorial Day weekend through to the Columbus Day weekend. (That is the end of May through to early October.)

Other facilities in the park include a camp store, showers, laundry and dump station. Ice and firewood can both be bought from the camp store.

There are also canoe and boat rentals and within the day use area of the park there is a picnic shelter which can be reserved for group picnics and outings, the shelter has a barbecue pit, horseshoe pit and a ballpark. It is in an area away from other park visitors and is the ideal place for a family reunion or works outing.

The Fall Foliage In New Hampshire Can Be Spectacular

Visitors to Bear Brook State Park can enjoy over forty miles of trails which can be used by hikers, riders and mountain bikers. The trails through the beautiful woods will often end at rarely visited ponds, creeks and hilltops.

Pets are permitted in the campground and on the trails as long as they are on a leash. However, they are not allowed in the day use area.
